Not sure if you guys are familiar with this or not, but recently I was at the grocery store and was browsing through their magazines and came across The Backwoodsman. It's a bi-monthly publication full of information geared towards survival, homesteading, hunting and trapping, etc. I've only read one issue of it, but am extremely impressed with it so far. I have a subscription, actually. I highly recommend their 3 anthologies. They are chock full of good useful info, and historical tidbits. Very nice primitive skills mag, and often has survival stories, gear, and items for the "possibles bag" of the modern and historic "mountain man". +1 on Backwoodsman & Wilderness way. Great mags. There is a new Mag due in Fall of '09 called "Survival.com". I'll be picking that up for sure. mock25.jpg

OOOOOooo! A new survival mag?? There hasn't been one of those since "Survival" and "American Survival Guide" went kaput. Hope in the new state of the economy they are able to hold on and get a decent readership. The 4 I subscribe to are Backwoods Home mag (probably the best self-reliance mag out there IMHO); Mother Earth News (not the mag it used to be, for sure, but still has good gardening and some homesteading ideas. A little too left-leaning for my taste though); Back Home (kind of a cross between Mother Earth and Backwoods Home, not bad); and Backwoodsman. I'm still debating about adding Wilderness Way to the list. I'd like to read a few more before I make up my mind on that. I also get National Geographic, Discover, and Popular Mechanics. Always some fascinating stuff going on out there.

I was flipping through a mother earth mag this morning at the grocery store and saw where in winter you can run the dryer vent inside for the added heat. They stretched a pantyhose over the end and noted not to do it with gas dryers and was best in dry climates.

Yep it puts out a lot of humidity some people attest to doing it with no problems, but it's not recommended. The other thing to be aware of if you do this, the pantyhose will indeed keep the lint from flying out in to your house. But you will need to clean the exhaust hose out often or you will end up burning your house down. Great magazine! I never miss an issue. I've also corresponded with Charlie Ritchie on a couple of occasions and he's one heck of a nice man!
