Default Got a cold steel military shovel

https://www.sworddemon.com/p-1704-co...ry-shovel.aspx

Just got it in the mail, going to sharpen it up. Plan to carry it for back country
skiing and maybe hiking snow shoeing and so on, during the snowy winter
months.

I plan to be light so I will have a wave multiple tool and this shovel with me,
as to be the only cutting tools that I will have. The shovel doing multiple usage,
as snow, dirt, shovel and a chopping tool when needed. Also maybe to dig
out punk wood if find downed log with dry punk wood inside.

Any with experience and thoughts? Tips?

Thanks

Dan

Maybe the folding handle ones are better or not? I don't know but I thought
to get this one as it look sturdy and it will hold up to the abuse. It is plenty
small enough to go into a normal sized to small sized back pack.

I had a thought to make substantial improvement, it needs a place to baton
the shovel so to split wood. I guess to weld a small round nickel size piece
of steel on the side of the shovel section right at the rear corner. This should
do the trick, may do this mod in the future.

I have not used it, want to check it out to see how well it functions as
a wood chopper and cuter and so on.

Great addition to your gear. This has been on my wish list ever since I saw the demonstration video:

Let us know how it works out once you put it to work.

Thumbs down multi uses - shovels

I don't get it. It didn't seem to do any of the various tasks particularly well. I bet I could do a better job at any of them with a nice camp axe or tomahawk.

It depends on what you want to do, in snow country it is good to carry
a snow shovel, if this can do the duty of a snow shovel then the
rest is a big bonus.

demo, that shovel looks really heavy. I know the mountaineer shovels for winter are quite durable yet very light.
