Here's a scenario however unlikely for discussion. Lets say like the show the "Colony", post apocolypse we, the members of Survivaltopics forms magically find ourselves together. At first you might think we'd have quite a society what with the incredible diversity of knowledge posessed here. But, here's the kicker, with all the strong personalities, the sheer numbers (1,000 members), who would emerge as leader? would there be in-fighting? would we survive and thrive or kill each other?

So all the members of one forum were together, no one else? I would say since the forum is what we have in common, then the creator of the forum should be the leader. I would elect Ron. I don't even know what leadership qualities Ron possesses, but in the end it's really irrelevant. If you had 100 people together and you had to throw together a new leadership structure immediately, the only way to do it is to have a few people make scrip (currency), and let people do their own thing, set up needed services and trade for scrip.

Yes you would have bickering... we wouldn't all be able to live in a big warehouse. You are basically talking about setting up a small town. You would have all of the same problems that any small town does.

OK, I'll play.

I think overall we would do quite well. Of course there would be some in-fighting. Even the closest families have that so a bunch of strangers, in some respects would naturally do the same.

I don't think there would be any one leader. Most likely a tribal council.
Hopefully elected by the group. And not too many on it otherwise there would be lots of debating and nothing getting done. Anyone who tried to dominate the group would probably be eliminated.

The very strong opinionated people would have to adapt. I don't think any trouble makers would be tolerated and put up with as passively as they are here.

I don't think anyone here is weak. Survival is not for the weak. I am aure that the kindness and respect we see here would be carried over into real life. Even in a stressful situation.

It would be an interesting situation to observe and or participate in. A council would be interesting but i do believe you would need one person to have the final say on things, elected by the group.

The most interesting aspect to me would be the total amount of real knowledge and expertise that the whole group here really has since there are over 1000 members but we hear so little from so many,hopefully, a lot of real talent, ie: engineers, doctors, nurses, law enorcement, current and ex military, and also the good folk who know how to grow crops, breed and raise cattle, gather, grow,prepare and preserve food.

It would take a while to learn everyones best attributes and designate duties, but personally, after much of what I have read here, I think this would be a great group to be in if things fall apart, especially if we had the time and ability to get all of our "supplies" along with ourselves to that BOL!!!!

WTH? Not one time have I even seen one episode of this show that everyone sems to be watching lol. Sounds cool, is it on spike? Speaking of spike the new Survival show is coming on Sept 1st premiere spike, looks good.


Ok as far as the question, lets do this lets have a mach setup.

Lets vote a council that would best serve the overall purposes of the group. Then have those people each week or day, post something for the others to offer baed on their appointed posts, IE CW as a Sage for example so he would offer a piece of survival wisdom every day or week. Lets say Kay appointed as Group culinary Manager, so she offers recipe or food info etc. CRASHDIVE appointed as weaponsmith so he would show us tips on knapping etc.

Stuff like that, just an idea

The show is a cool concept, and it does have some useful info sometimes (like how to rig solar panels so they turn automatically and face the sun), but overall its retarded because of all the drama involved, lack of strong leadership, outspoken women (and one man). I really dont find it that entertaining.

I think we'd all do fine. The biggest fight I think we'd have is if we don't have 1,000 guns and some people didn't get them... or even if we had 1,000 they didn't get ENOUGH of them.

As for leadership... I think a sort of regular colony meeting should be in effect. Everyone meets at a specific place once a week and the citizens of our new town would voice their concerns, we would debate on what to do, and we would put it to a vote. There would have to be a chairman to make sure it didn't turn out as everyone screaming at everyone else. I give that "honor" to Ron.

We could probably do it well enough with the amount of knowledge we have all together, though. Actually, we could probably live a fairly decent lifestyle, too, after we get shelters and food and water and everything. Hell, I bet we could get electricity after a while.
