if ya gotta hit a store for supplies I'd go for a bait store, They have basic camping supplies, snacks, tackle, Some have live bait,ie fish,crawdads both of which can be eaten, flashlights ,knives, and various other things.

Default Do you think that the stores will be there still?

If you understand the mob mentality that forms when the SHTF then you will know that within the 1st. 24 hours after the onset of Social Unrest, the stores in the city will be looted of all usable items and usually, when emptied of the valuables they will be set on fire.

If you didn't prepare before hand or come to the realization that an event is happening, it is unlikely that you will be able to get anything useful from stores, no matter what kind. Looting is too infectious for the store to have anything left at all and it happens really quick.

Better to wait for the underground economy to develop and have something valuable to barter with.

According to research by the dept. of homeland security and the justice dept. In a disaster/SHTF scenerio. Looting will be.......

1. Pharmacies (for illicet drugs)
2. Liqour stores ( obvious reasons)
3. High end stores ( electronics, jewelry, Leather etc)
4. Tobacco /convinence store ( obvious reasons)
5. grocery stores/department stores ( again obvious reasons)
6. Automotive parts/accesory stores
7. Auto dealerships ( steal vehicles)

It is interesting to me and puzzleing that instead of food and supplies to keep them alive MOST looters want stuff for highs and lows or "toys" before survival.

And folks, when the dust settles those who prepare will maybe a little worse for the wear, but may have the option of driving home in a low mileage Hummer/Ford F150 or whatever floats your boat. I'm thinking, "I am Legend" kind of SHTF

I think that some of the assumtion is that the govt/fema would sent you food anyway so as long as you can steal something you can use or sell later then it will be fine.

here and I'm sure you have it there there are folks in social housing (the equiv of a trailer park from what I've seen I guess without deliberately stereotyping anyone) who cant afford proper food but have wide screen plasma tv's and ps2's

Yes kinda like the welfare cadillac. (true story here) A man called the Police to report his cadillac had been broken into. Police responded to take a report. The contents of the reported stolen:

$ 3,000.00 stereo system
$ 1,000.00 in CD's
$ $2,000.00 in gold jewelry
$ 600.00 in food stamps

Hi, did Krait start a new thread on this? Obviously living in Chicago where it doesn't take Katrina for the cops to pull guns on us, I could use the info too! Thanks, SG

Anyone interested in the post Katrina fiasco can do a web search 'cause I have read many first-hand accounts people have written describing their ordeals. Some are very scary and turned anti gun believers to pro gun believers really fast.
