You know what makes me happy about this thread and these answers? This is making everybody think and discuss and consider our options. It's always best to be prepared ahead of time, know exactly what you will say, instead of trying to figure out what to do at the last minute.

I would never turn a hungry child away if I could help it. But as for adults, I fall back to the old saying: Give a man a fish........., but teach a man to fish.......

What about Rats? (See Warvet's post) Give a man a RAT and what do you figure happens? Teaching a man to catch rats, now there's a useful talent! Milking rats, well, that's a man with a lot of patience and teeny-tiny fingers.

If it came to giving stuff away, my parents would but I'd avoid it. I mean, it would make me feel like a total a$$ to turn someone away, but if you give them something disgusting like this... delicious infected corn... which actually IS edible and is not poisonous... maybe some prison wine would go well with it? Yes, that is a dirty sock in the bag...So, if you give them that, they can eat and they'll never come back again . It reminds me of the story my dad used to tell me, his friends used to mooch free meals off him so one day he paid a farmer to butcher up a horse for him and he cooked it and told them it was steak. They never came back.

Just IMHO but when it came to survival if these are all I could find for edibles I would suck it up and make the best of it. A little salt/pepper would help or some garlic powder but you do what you gotta do. Would share with the kids/babies with me if needed and only to the ones I knew would stand a chance "but parents that slowed us down as a party or group and where clueless here is how to get some of your own so happy hunting". No offense but its called "survival" and that comes down to very tough decisions even if it doesn't seem moral. Its like "triage on the battlefield" you save who you can and the ones that are possible to save at all. I would truly hate to be in a metropoltian area if the SHTF. The decisions alone could haunt your sleep. Go to any major city in the US or in the world for that matter an ask a few simple questions.....can you start a fire using a flint? Can you build a shelter using nothing but a knife and common sense? Can you make edible food out of rats, pet dogs, pet cats, pet birds, pet snakes, pet lizards, pet spiders etc? Can you use your 3,000.00 citizen watch to tell where north is? Can you make a pine needle tea? Can you use those bifocal glasses you wear to make a fire? Can you make a water collector using that umbrella? Can you use those leather shoes to hone your knife? Just to name a few and I gurantee you people would just sit there in total stupidity if asked these VERY basic questions. This is how far away man has gotten from there very heritage. Its sad to see indeed.

I have actually considered this. It's a tough call. The difference for us is that we have resources and skills we could try and trade for what we needed. But I would totally understand if we got that desperate and were turned away. I would hope that my freinds and family are able to get to a safe place. Everyone we know has a large group of friends so there are a lot of options. It's a security issue. Am I willing to risk an angry mob breaking down my door to get what they want? I'm not. And some lowlifes use children to gain the trust of their intended victims. It's a tough call. And again. I don't think there is any right or wong answer. Just something to be preparred for. I may or may not stick to my current plan. It all just depends. But, I'm glad it's being considered now instead of later. I do love the idea of giving them something that is edible but not really good. I've thought of that. Just going out and picking some plantains, clover and dandelion and mixing up a yard salad. hehehe
