Impersonating a LEO or military officer may be illegal right now, but if it comes down to a choice between breaking that law and my somehow surviving, I'd dress up like a female Marine Corp Brigadier and do a pole dance at the police barricade to the tune of a John Philip Souza march. (wonder where can I get me some size 12 EEE black pumps?) I reckon all legal bets are off in a true SHTF moment. If you aren't prepared to go all the way to survive, why prepare at all? |

What are your collective opinions on a "survival" weekend to go off alone and test yourself and your gear? I've thought of driving out alone into the middle of the farm, pulling over somewhere off one of the minor logging road, and setting up for a few days with what I have in my BOB. My thoughts were to try out all my stuff together. Build a fire a few different ways. Dig a Dakota fire pit. See what I could catch in a fish trap and with the tackle in my kit. Maybe shoot or snare a squirrel or rabbit. Clean, cook and eat what I caught. Make up a batch of Banock and cook it on a stick. Suck down some of that delicious goo for desert. Drink some instant coffee made with standing water filtered and boiled in my Kelly Kettle. I'd stretch my tissue thin polywhateverthehellitis tarp over the bed of the pickup using a sapling and some 550 Paracord, roll out my Italian army blanket and hope I can get to sleep before some booger gets me. (We often hear buggers out in the woods at night while down at the farm) You know. Try out all my stuff together. See if it works. See if I die. I have tried out all my gear at one time or another. Mostly in the swamp behind the house where I play. But frankly it left me unsatisfied. I'm pestering for a true "field" test. Here is my question. How tough a test should I put it (and me) through? If I were serious maybe I should have Darlene drop me and my BOB off on the side of the road somewhere with instructions to come back and look for me in three or four days. Have any of you who, like me, are not camper or hunter types ever tried this? Have you just "bugged out" to see what the verdict would be? I figure it might just be enlightening.

I haven't tried this, although I am in the camper/hiker group. I've been thinking about this today and wondering why. ![]() I think the biggest factor is that I will know it's not a real situation. I will be lacking the proper "save my butt motivation" so it will just be camping and playing with gear. Even if it is miserable I will know it's very temporary. I do like testing out gear though and seeing what might be missing. I've been through enough that I have no doubt I have the right mindset. Skills can always be improved though and I'm always working on that. Quote:
