Are you suggesting impersonating a LEO or soldier? Both of those are highly illegal, and could get you into far more trouble than whatever you are trying to get away from. The latter is a federal offense. I don't think that if the SHTF the place I want to find myself is in military custody or the county hoosgow. Be careful.

A portable flashing light, although"In ya face",could be somthing to carry in ya BOV,along with maybe a few dress changes.FFS,you guys make the movies.Think A Team, now that was lame.Seriously though, most ppl would fall for that kinda shite.

Excuse me SIR,are you captain Peters(Obviously not,It's your story!!)Are you holding the county line?Try that without looking official.Ya carn't allways go through/around a blockaid, thats when the charm comes in.Your Not,shit man, stay here and hold on,we got 4 trucks comming this way with supplies for most ppl,I gotta go,Captain Peters need s conformation of the convoy and all lines of communication are down,Sir,What is your name, sir please stay focused,I need you to stay put and direct the convoy where it is needed.

I think this is a bad way to go. I much prefer the don't draw attention to yourself/don't stand out approach. IMHO look like the average Joe would work much better but maybe we will never have to find out.

Default Impersonation

Impersonating a LEO or military officer may be illegal right now, but if it comes down to a choice between breaking that law and my somehow surviving, I'd dress up like a female Marine Corp Brigadier and do a pole dance at the police barricade to the tune of a John Philip Souza march. (wonder where can I get me some size 12 EEE black pumps?)

I reckon all legal bets are off in a true SHTF moment. If you aren't prepared to go all the way to survive, why prepare at all?

I'd even go as far as suggesting you not stop moving until everybody you see is sporting camouflage; including babies. Or at least the people should all be wearing Dale Earnhardt or Bass Proshop ball caps. Only then would I feel safe enough to stop and rest.

Down here you get to that point 25 or 30 miles south of Turner Field. Forty miles and you can sleep. At least with one eye open.
I am at the sleep with one eye open starting point all ready, hell when my son was born he left the hospital wearing camouflage and a hat that said i like deer, they're tasty.

Wow, that is a mental image that I probably will need YEARS of hard drinking and psychotherapy to erase. Thank you SO much, Taint!

Get the best gear you can, testing it will give you all the beat-up look you need. You can always drop your pack in a garbage bag in populated area's , but if it get's rough you want dependable gear.

Default Test Run

What are your collective opinions on a "survival" weekend to go off alone and test yourself and your gear? I've thought of driving out alone into the middle of the farm, pulling over somewhere off one of the minor logging road, and setting up for a few days with what I have in my BOB.

My thoughts were to try out all my stuff together. Build a fire a few different ways. Dig a Dakota fire pit. See what I could catch in a fish trap and with the tackle in my kit. Maybe shoot or snare a squirrel or rabbit. Clean, cook and eat what I caught. Make up a batch of Banock and cook it on a stick. Suck down some of that delicious goo for desert. Drink some instant coffee made with standing water filtered and boiled in my Kelly Kettle.

I'd stretch my tissue thin polywhateverthehellitis tarp over the bed of the pickup using a sapling and some 550 Paracord, roll out my Italian army blanket and hope I can get to sleep before some booger gets me. (We often hear buggers out in the woods at night while down at the farm) You know. Try out all my stuff together. See if it works. See if I die.

I have tried out all my gear at one time or another. Mostly in the swamp behind the house where I play. But frankly it left me unsatisfied. I'm pestering for a true "field" test.

Here is my question. How tough a test should I put it (and me) through? If I were serious maybe I should have Darlene drop me and my BOB off on the side of the road somewhere with instructions to come back and look for me in three or four days.

Have any of you who, like me, are not camper or hunter types ever tried this? Have you just "bugged out" to see what the verdict would be? I figure it might just be enlightening.

I haven't tried this, although I am in the camper/hiker group.
I've been thinking about this today and wondering why.

I think the biggest factor is that I will know it's not a real situation. I will be lacking the proper "save my butt motivation" so it will just be camping and playing with gear. Even if it is miserable I will know it's very temporary.
I do like testing out gear though and seeing what might be missing.

I've been through enough that I have no doubt I have the right mindset.
Skills can always be improved though and I'm always working on that.
