We have an abundance of foods, dry and canned. Our problem is being snowed in. Very possible here. Might not be so long but..... We have a generator and plenty of gas for 6 weeks. Drilled well so H20 is covered. In the comfort of the house 500 to 1000 calories a day would be plenty. Balanced of course. Here's a couple links to food shelf life charts. I agree with Foxfire. I could last but my animals would starve if I could not go out to feed them daily. I think I would be alright as I don't eat 3 squares a day. I probably eat 2 tho. Water wouldn't be a problem unless it got shut off for some reason then I'd have to break into my prep water but I think that would be okay, I'd probably stink to high heaven tho. Hehe and as long as I could get on here I'd be fine.

I could never survive for six weeks. I complain that we don't have enough food in three days, because most of it is fresh. we would have enough canned food for about 1-2 weeks if we had a small diet.

We would be ok. As long as we didn't have to leave, and I had time to fill tubs/containers with water, we would have plenty for the 4 of us for about 3 mos. Not all would be tasty after the spices were gone, but we could do it. Hardest part is not going anywhere and keeping up with the dog doo.

I have in my basement, 110 gal of drinking water, 100lb of rice, maybe 75lb or so of beans, 45lb of flour, 45lb of sugar, a shelf of home canned veggies and fruits, I should have atleat 25 jars of meat (mostly wild game) and canned fish. Out in the garage I have 2 propane heaters, a grill, a few camping stoves, 4 full extra propane tanks and 2 that I will be filling next week. Enough firewood to last the winter for my fireplace, a small gas geni but only about 10gal of fuel. A deepfreeze with over 300lb of all kinds of stuff (have to eat that stuff first) a pantry with maybe 100-150 cans of supermarket canned foods. Not to mention all the pet food and other food in the kitchen. But what I am lacking here it seems is wash water and what not. Hmm... gonna have to look into that. I mean the water heater only has so much right.

I have more than enough food to last myself and my two dogs(siberian huskies, approx. 50lbs apiece) at least 3 months comfortably, much longer if not doing much in the way of physical activity and not needing a whole lot of food to get by on. I'd never eat my dogs under any circumstances, other people's dogs, yeah, I would. My dogs are excellent hunters and do bring their kills back to me, so they'd provide me with food, if need be. But more importantly, and one of the reasons I have huskies, is they also provide me an alternate form of transportation, and for their size, they really don't eat all that much, so "fueling" them would be easier than fueling any other form of transportation, including me walking. Now, depending on what the situation is, I may need to leave as early as one week in to retrieve "supplies". I know I should, but I don't stockpile nearly enough beer....lol May sound funny, but beer is full of useless calories that will keep you alive.....and drunk. What's more is, if you're going to be spending a lot of time closed up, in my case alone, in your house for a prolonged period of time, being drunk will immensely help the time pass by much easier. Also, I keep a large bottle of Centrium vitamin/mineral supplement tablets in my house. At one per day and 180 per bottle, that's half a year's worth of all nutrition needed. The only thing they won't provide is energy and the "full" feeling you get from actually eating. It would allow me to eat just enough to get by though, feeling and energy wise, without having to worry about whether or not my nutritional needs are being met. So when I am forced to go out and fight for new supplies, I should be far healthier and therefore stronger than the average person I'd encounter and possibly need to fight for any supplies I may need. And the fact that I enjoy cooking things from scratch, I have nearly every spice you can think of, along with several types of cooking oil and other various, non-perishable, things involved in cooking from scratch. So I could probably make just about anything "edible", including worms dug up in my yard. |

This is an interesting thread Colcordmama posted getting people to think over their prep supplies. Kinda goes along with thread from Omegaman "What I Have Seen Sellout". Hope it helps you to think too.
