First off, if you are in a foreign land, eat like the natives. Trackers can literally smell you, if you eat differently, because obviously you will literally exude what you ingest through your pores... Also, to make being tracked through scent by predatory manimals (depending on the wind, people can easily smell you probably over a mile, if not further), cook FAST and eat it FAST and wash up FAST. If you allow the smoke from your fire to be built and burn close up next to a tree with a lot of foliage hopefully, the branches and leaves will spread the smoke out and it will be less noticeable/visible from a distance. Spread out your fire coals after they have cooled off, and if you are in a do or die survival mode, bury your trash too, to prevent trackers from finding you as easily and/or gaining an understanding about you and your situation (i.e. who you're with, how many, etc). A good tracker WILL still find you regardless but will take them longer. Try to leave as few signs behind, and bury your poop too, perhaps along with your trash under a log or something similar.

A quick thought depending on what you're making. I usually smell the seasonings I use so maybe you could add them halfway through or at the end? Just to keep the aroma down.

Well I doubt that in a SHTF situation you would be cooking cassarole but just for a quick thought or 2. If you are outside and you are under High pressure (Weather)with not a lot of wind, then your aromas aren't really a problem. The smoke will rise and your cooking smell will also. If not then you could. 1) Use a double boil method over a small Dakota Firehole to quickly heat what you can. If MREs and the like. 2) Cook your meats in a Makeshift oven Made from whatever you can. Sealing the meats in a small (Bakable) container will diminish the cooking odors. Bark& Mud method or tin cans with foil lid works well. Either way your smell from the fire itself is probably more of a problem than your food. Both could indicate your position pretty easily. Location, Location Location |

Thanks for the posts guys. I think this could be a real potential problem for preppers as we will be eating when others are starving, and they will be looking for any sign of food. As for the neighbor....he's getting a mystery delivery tomorrow from the supermarket and I'm trying to organize some precooked grampy meals for him, however having said that there are certain meals I make (and baking) that seems to draw my neighbors in, whats a girl to do I do take pride in my cooking and feeding my family well even when money is tight.

Stock up on dried Bombay duck, it really smells like crap when it’s cooking...but it tastes good.
