A small wooded area on railroad property is where my Hobo camp was located. I don't think I could really narrow it down to a single item. The most used items were:
Pot
Roofing hatchet(Hammer/hatchet combination)
Wool Blankets
discarded tents/tarps

I think the best way to describe it really is just a campsite that was used for a really long time. Meaning we had tripods lashed together, some "camp furniture" stuff like that. My first camp was more elaborate than the second. It sorta' looked like a Boy Scout pioneering project. After it was bull dozed we didn't get so elaborate... what was the point? It could be destroyed quickly at someone else's whim. A central rock lined fire pit about 3 foot across. Tents the we had "dumpster dived" for behind the local BSA meeting place. stuff like that.

Poco I asked these questions because in a disaster or SHTF thing, many well to do folks would have to think like that. I emphasize the integration between urban and wilderness and some street folk have the urban stuff down. However many puritan bush crafter's shun this idea if it is not O’natural some may snub their nose at you. On the other hand if the homeless had knowledge of bush craft they would fare better IMHO…
It takes two to tango

Thank you for your response.

To tell the truth I "bushcrafted" in the city. Survival is IMO 70% knowledge, 25% skill, 5% improvisation. You have to know what to do first and the more you know the better you are at adapting to your particular situation. You have to have some practice to know how to do it properly. You have to be "Creative" to make some things work in an unusual situation, even though it isn't meant to be used that way/work that way.
I agree if more Homeless knew about "classic" wilderness survival techniques they would definitely fare better. It is what helped me. I was one of the rare homeless people who did any cooking at all where I was. Most depended on "soup kitchens" and such for their food. Most homeless I knew did not even have a pot!!

Joe, sorry, but a little help on the use of the "zombie" term. It means something to me from a game and movie perspective, but I get the sense that you are applying it to something real.

in survial terms Zombies can mean any type of enemy ie gangs, plague victims or even real zombies, it is usually a lighthearted or derisive term for gangs of undesirables. the other term used a lot is MZBs or mutant zombie bikers.

there are a couple of survival forums thet have thier main emphasis in this ares (zombiesquad being the most famous) and whilst they are a great prepper resource they also have a large section (mainly tounge in cheek) on protection from MZBs in a TSHTF or TEOTWAWKI situation

I may just have to do that. I'm looking at my Resident Evil Training videos and am furiously taking notes. HEADSHOTS only HEADSHOTS!! Looks like I may need some range time as well.

Thank you CGU, for helping me in the fight against the evil hordes.....!!

Well Poco, that took some guts to publish your story like that. I don't know if I'd have the nerve to do it. I have also been homeless and altho my story is somewhat like yours mine is from a woman's view which I'm very sure many parts are very different. I still find it painful to talk about and scary too. I may not be confident enough to do it. But thank you for sharing.
