Maybe stabilized oxygen is good, but I'm wondering if it has been tested thoroughly.

I came across an Aqua Technology (not familiar with company) site saying, "I feel that the verdict on oxygen-enriched concentrates is yet to be rendered for situations as might be encountered in a full scale water emergency." Source for the quote and more information is here:

Emergency Water Purification Techniques

BTW, this is my first reply so I hope the quotes etc aren't messed up. Gulp....

lots of people here probably have some sophisticated approaches. mine is simple. save 2 liter soda bottles (very durable due to increased plastic thickness to handle pressures). clean them out good. add water. add 2-4 drops of bleach (I use 2 and its fine). sharpy the date on them. store in a dark place out of direct sunlight. voila. don't use milk jugs.

Kev, how long can you get with the soda bottles and The (2 drops)bleach ? and how do you measure the drops of bleach? sounds like a great Idea

I refresh the water every year, sure it would be good for at least two. I use a dropper from CVS. in a pinch, I've also grabbed a plastic straw (put it into bleach about 2", put thumb over end and lift; the liquid will stay in straw; put it over the bottle and squeeze the straw w/ other hand until you get desired number of drops. I got about 20 of these in the garage next to bug out box; and about 10 in trunk of my car.

soda bottles much much more durable plastic. just clean them good before using (don't want sugar from soda in there)

The stuff is good to have on hand because it has a lot of other (supposed) uses, it stores way longer than chlorine (which starts to deteriorate after about a year), and is small and easy to carry with you (2 oz bottle fits in your pocket and goes a long way).

One ounce will stabilize 55 gallons of water for 5 years.

Here's a link:

Stabilized Oxygen Water Purifier: Maintain Clean Water

You can find more about it by poking around on any internet search engine and make up your own mind, but this is the stuff I use for my set of 55 gallon drums and I keep a 2oz bottle in my BOB and in my camping gear.

I have been using this product since March of 2000...can't say enough good things about it. Besides water purification I brush my teeth with it and rinse with it twice a day and has completely cured my bleeding gum's caused by bacteria.

Used it on a month long trip to South Africa in all water consumed and never got sick once...

Bob

That's what I do and for rotation always seem to end up using them for something throughout the year like hunting, camping or some small emergency. I change out the water, but end up resuing the bottle often. I don't do the bleach or sharpy. I might add the bleach going forward.

These are very durable btw. I took a few on a 3 day kayak trip a while back. One of the other kayaker's had the milk jugs and split two loading up. I can bounce my Mt. Dew bottles on the ground!

many ways, water tanks(up to the size of a oil furnace tank to as small as a gas can and some sizes in between) and locked gravity fed wells are the only viable ones for bugging in/stay home emergency situations are the only ones that I can think of.
