I was gonna say the well bucket also. I am not a member of the alpharubicon but there is a description on how to make your own on their site. I am pretty computer illiterate ,and as such I have had no idea as to how to post a link.

The other option we need to look into here is an alternate energy source (solar, hydro, wind) to power the well and septic system we have.
Even a small gas geny for Emergency. I have one that just runs 0ne outlet, the fridge and a back up water heater (for an RV)

Build a Well Bucket

Thanks kevin! I hope this works. I hope the folks at alpharubicon don't nail me for plagiarism. Again I do not belong to this group. They seem like a great bunch of folks. Really into preparedness. Their website will say it better than I can. All credit goes to the folks at the rubicon.

A good question I think has been discussed before on here. As I understand it, hand pumps arent affective deeper than 200 ft. Mine is a little over 300. Im thinking a generator for my needs ,after my stored water is depleted but have thought of digging a shallow well with handpump for emergency water. Non-potable but can be boiled and drank. Most water is used for washing anyway.

There are some that are supposed to work on deeper wells. Someone referred me to this company but we haven't checked it out yet.

Default most prized posession...

I couldn't live without my generator. But truth be known it could lack gas or the pump in the well could go bad. So I think a hand pump is great to have.

My inlaws have one that's over 50 years old and still works fine. Can still buy the leathers for it too. Very expensive new looking at these links.

Maybe I can build my own?

Thanks for the well bucket link. never heard of that. It's quick and easy to build.

inner tubes or maybe a roofing supply store. The tubes would be my first guess,I would think that even a larger bicycle tube would yield enough rubber if split and opened up. The water system on my property is a well that pumps into a 500 gal holding tank before it is pumped to the houses, so I always have 500 gals in reserve. I also have water rights to a creek a little bit aways so I have a 1" line that runs down to near the pump house. This is my back up, along with irrigation and watering animals, I can boil it if need be. Also close by the place there is a creek that emerges from the earth. If absolutely had to I could "bucket brigade" daily consumable water to the place. I really should get a generater some day. I think I would like to have that in a metal building, or build a Faraday cage around it though. I am going to check into the hand pump also.Hmmm, still lots to do apparently . As an after thought,I wonder if I have enough drop on my gravity line to power a generator? Something else to look into.
