Look up thermal covers for your bottles. It should help immensely in the prevention of freezing and concerning naglene bottles, the fact that camelbaks are used by the military is enough for me. End of story. Armageddon quality.

PS

Yes, having more than one water carrying device is the way to go.

I'm sure I would burn myself trying to pour near boiling water into a flexible bladder. That would be the last thing you'd want to do if you were out in a survival situation -- get serious burns on your hands.

I am wondering what you are boiling your water in that you would then transfer into the bladder.

It is interesting to try to boil water in a plastic bottle. I've done that before successfully, but the areas of the bottles that aren't in contact with the water will melt.

I fill em w/ boiling water before going out, then putting them into an insulated zip holder.

I'll be using a JetBoil 1.5 liter pot. It's large enough for small group use, and small enough to be easily packed and filled with many kitchen essentials and protect them. It's insulated, and comes with both a plastic lid and a cover for the "fluxring" below that also acts as a plate. It also has large, folding handles that make handling the full pot relatively easy and controllable.
