Default Boil Water in a Leaf

I'm reading the book 'My Side of the Mountain' and it mentions you can boil water in a leaf.

I've boiled water in a paper cup and a plastic bottle before, but haven't tried a leaf yet.

Might be good to know in case a paper cup or plastic bottle aren't handy out in the woods, ha ha.

Here's a video:

My luck I would find a poison leaf.

It is good to know that if I have nothing else a leaf may work

I'll keep the boil in the leaf option neatly tucked away, but did you happen to check out any of the other videos? He boiled water by lighting an almond on fire and it burned steady for about 3min. Food or tinder..

I'm pretty sure you can boil water in anything that will hold water. When I was a shite disturbing kid I took a blow torch to the side of a water filled collapsable plastic container with no ill effect...darn!

I just burned an almond to see for myself. Yep, it burns well. This is good to know as I usually carry trailmix (GORP) when I go hiking.

I just finished reading 'My Side of the Mountain'. I read it years ago back in 6th grade, but only had a vague memory of it. I think Ron mentioned it in another book related thread and I decided to re-read it; Probably with a little more appreciation this time, ha ha. And, since I recently read 'Hatchet'.

I liked it! It's definitely worth reading. It's considered a book for juveniles. Another clever kid who manages very well out in the woods. So, it's another easy read (about 180 pages).

There's several copies of the book at all the local libraries in my area. I had trouble finding it thinking it was in the Young Adult section, but it was actually in the Children's/ Juvenile section. The movie, 'A Cry in the Wild' (based on the book 'Hatchet') was also in the children's section. Guess, I'm bein' a big kid lately, ha ha.

Check it out!

I'd guess pesticides sprayed out in the woods are less likely than in a residential area. This is another one of those 'if you had to' situations. So, there's often risks like this one may opt to take. This is just another option to consider depending on how desperate the situation may be.

If I thought there were pesticides on the leaf, I'd rinse the leaf off with the dirty water first before boiling the water I planned on drinking.
