Default Water containers.

I took a quick look through this forum and found that, we don't have a thread on water containers! So I'm gonna start this off with the simple ambiguous and open ended question of.....

What do you use to carry your water in the bush, and what do you reccomend avoiding in a water container? If its steel what type of steel do you use? Yall know the drill, talk about containers until we end up changing topics to the ridiculousness of the milspec BDU buttons failure rate. (inevitably by virtue of some post by CW.)

I have camelbacks (3 liter), canteen cups, 32oz Nalgene bottles.

And I just got this the other day and am lookiing forward to using it. It is suprising how many uses it has.

This is a great subject, I can't wait to see what others use.

Since you said in the bush... I carry my camelbak 70 ounce "unbottle, in the winter in the summer a 2 liter water bladder"and my 2 stainless steel water bottles filled or not filled depending on location year round. Bladder always kept full as possible. I always carry the SS bottles because I can cook in them as well as heat water if desperate times occur.

i have a 3 litre camel back in my 3 day bag, 1 kidney shaped canteen (cup fits to bottom) this is for backpack hunting.

if i have a basecamp i have a 25litre colapsable water container, 2 colapsable 10 litre water buckets for collecting the water to filter and fill the water container (1 has been turned into a camp shower with sprinkler nozzle attachment) this pretty much provides me all the water i need for an indefinate stay

NZ is the land of plenty waterwise so I only need to carry enough for day use (camelback or 1.5 litre bottle) but I must confess now that I'm alittle older I also carry a hottie with previously boiled water (makes a nice little back up.

Unlike out West were people fight over water, down here its a nuisance that gets into your basement. It may be nasty, but its all over the place.

I have a couple of two quart canteens lashed to my pack. And I carry the obligatory purifying pills, siphon hose, collapsible bladder, and a few filters.

I've toyed with the idea of getting one of those filtration/purification gizmos. But have not coughed up the money yet.

In my secret "bird flu" shelter I have three 30 gallon drums of water. Set aside is a pound of "high test" Calcium Hypochlorite for purification of replacement water. Plus I have an electric (bilge) pump, lines and holding tanks necessary for filtration and purification of water on a 30 gallon scale. I also have the lab stuff I need to calculate and make up the necessary Hypochlorite solutions.

On top of all that my wife keeps and rotate two dozen flats of 2 liter bottled water. Some guy delivers it on a route.

In the areas I hike/ backpack in FL, water is hard to come by (drought conditions). So, sometimes I've gotta carry more water than I'd like. Sometimes over 2 gallons for a 3 day trip (which is heavy) if I don't expect to encounter water sources (or rain). Also, I keep extra water in my truck so if I've run out before the end of my trip and dehydrated by the time I get back, I know I've got water to look forward to.

I use nothing but the best top-of-the-line equipment when it comes to carrying water. I typically carry a couple of bottled waters (0.5 liter) that fit in the side pockets of my pack. I use a variation of old 2 liter soda bottles, old 1-gallon apple juice jugs, old 1/2 gallon bottles of Gatorade, old 1-quart Gatorade bottles, plastic bags as rain catches, etc... Whatever cheap/ free durable lightweight containers I happened to have around.

An empty 1-quart Gatorade bottle makes for a good pee bottle if ya gotta get up in the middle of the night to urinate.

I have a Katadyn Hiker Pro water pump/filter, purification tabs, chlorine, bandana, coffee filters, etc... to purify water I come across. For boiling, I use a cheapy aluminum mess kit ($5 bought at Walmart). Nothin' but the best, ha ha.

Worst water I've had to work with was some thick green slimy pond water. There was an alligator in the pond so I had to risk getting water not knowing where the gator was. This is where one of those collapsible water bags woulda come in handy.

I've since upgraded to include a generic 2-Liter water bladder. So, I'm starting to keep up with the Jones', ha ha.

Well sort of. I am actually more of a defrocked alchemist. Blow up one silly little Jr. College chemistry lab and nobody cuts you any slack after that.
