Default Tricks to remove metal bottle from fire with no handle?

Hello,

I decided I wanted a survival kit to fit into my jacket, for when I may
leave camp or drop the pack when I go for the summit.

I picked this water bottle up.

klean kanteen wide: 12oz eco-friendly, bpa-free stainless steel water bottle

I got the flatter lid with the D ring, so that it will fit into the pocket better.
I got it in the mail and happy with it, it fits into a jacket pocket fine, lightweight
and I can use it to dump hot water in to make camp food.

The question I have and is bothering me, how would I use it to make water
from snow or boil water? I need a way to get it away from the fire. Can
one use gloved hands successfully? I have a Leatherman wave tool, I could
use the pliers if I carry this tool. I ordered a Swiss knife without pliers, since
it is lighter, I may have this.

I just wonder if any has any tricks on how to handle something like this
which could be hot and you have to carry it away from the fire. Also what
way could one put it on the fire to work well for boiling water and melting
snow?

Dan

you can use the wire in your survival kit to make a hanger loop for it and dangle it over the fire. watch it though as thin steel doesnt like super hot embers and will warp and trash it in minutes.

Maybe cook off of a smaller coal from your big fire and extinguish the fire when boiling etc. is finished. Use dirt snow or sufficate it with a rock. You'll still need a way to support your cup.....

with water in it it shouldnt go much above boiling point. I've seen a rig where you use a split stick and a couple of split rings or string. doesnt make drinking from it much fun till its cooled a bit whatever you use. anyone who has welded their lips to a GI cup will agree with me on that. a bit of duct tape round the top works wonders

Coughlan's makes a pot gripper that is pretty cheap and made of aluminum so it is light weight. But it is, well, cheap

If you have any type of ring to hook to, any old green stick would work to get it off the coals. Or you could just use the dump hot rock into it method instead for boiling.

I think this is the best option, it has a indentation on the bottle for a wire
to go around and I have some light stainless steel wire in my tool box.

I won't do this unless it is a real situation where I need to do it. But
will watch the steel when so.

Thanks

Dan

take a forked stick and a straight stick. place the straight stick through the "y" then push two stick ends in your hands together to "grab" the bottle. hard to explain, maybe I'll have to get a picture.

the "y" held vertically should give you support I think. I've seen this technique used to remove hot rocks from fire for making a fire bed.
