a simple way to do this is to get a 400 gal poly stock tank set it outside. Place a log, 2x4, 4x4(pressure treated) small inflatable dolly or wheel barrel tire, in the tank. The object will move with the wind and keep the water from freezing rapidly. Plus you can set it where you can collect rain water from the roof in it, so no hauling water to the cabin. Just be sure when you plumb it to use filters. you might even be able to rig up a solar panel to keep a 12 volt battery charged to power a portable thermostatically controlled stock tank heater.

I'm considering something along the same lines but not with the issue of solid freezing in my face. RV places sell 30 or 50 gallon containers for water that are heavy plastic. I think I'm going to use 5 gallon foldable water containers just for the functional mobility and filling ease.

Would wrapping something like that in a blanket (regardless of what kind) help keep it from freezing and bursting? Seems like the upright storage might make a difference just because of the seams.

Does the cabin have a crawl space? I have checked the temperature in the crawl space of my house over extended periods and it has never dropped below freezing. Of course, I had the house heated.... Here in North Alabama, we do get cold spells of 20s and occaisionally teens.
