A good button compass has saved more than one person from becomming lost. While traveling in unfamilar areas I frequently make quick checks on my button compass in order to help memorize the lay of the land.
These 20 millimeter diameter button compasses are very handy to have. They are about as big around as a penny, have a luminous dial, and are accurate enough to get a quick fix on direction.
Each compass is personally checked by me against a very accurate land surveying compass (I was a land surveyor in the Great North Woods for much of my life).
Sprinkle several of these excellent little compasses amongst your gear. They are small, lightweight, and inexpensive.
You'll find these 20mm button compasses a very handy addition to your survival kits, backpacks, and and travel gear. They also make great gifts and stocking stuffers.
To use a compass, be sure to hold the compass in a level position so that the compass card can freely swing!

I like these compasses and each of my children now carries one wherever they go. A great teaching aid.
AT Hiker is right - we placed these compasses on the kitchen table and discovered the table isn't level! You have to hold any compass horizontally level or it ain't gonna work!

I purchased twelve of these button compasses from Ron and am very pleased. The button compass is accurate enough for general navigation and we often use them to get quick fixes on direction of travel and the location of objects in the distance.
As Ron mentions, to properly use a compass you need to hold the compass in a level position so that the compass card can swing freely and align with magnetic north. This is very easy to do.
He has also tested each compass to make sure it functions properly.
It is as simple as this: when using your compass, be sure to hold the compass level so that you can visually see the compass card turning.
