Gave each of my boys a Ranger FireSteel Tube and they love them. My eight year old had a fire started before his older brothers.

Mix up some petroleum jelly into lint from your clothes dryer and keep in a small container. Aim the firesteel sparks at a quarter sized piece and instant flame that will burn for a couple of minutes.

Perfect size to take anywhere. Light, tough, weatherproof. I just used some paracord, made a lanyard and keep it hung inside my backpack. Never have to worry about fire again.
