9-Point Survival Plan

During World War II the defenders of tiny Wake Island were surrounded and besieged by the enemy. Major Devereaux was surveying the needs of the defenders and quipped:

"Maybe you oughta get more, maybe you will get more, but all you can depend on is what you already got."

The modern world faces a number of man-made and natural disaster scenarios that the wise individual and family would do well to prepare for. Many people seem to think someone else will be there to take care of the when TSHTF. This is a big mistake.

...all you can depend on is what you already got

The unexpected 911 terrorist attack in New York City is but one example that shows how vulnerable we all are. The miserable performance of the expensive United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during the Katrina hurricane disaster proves that we cannot rely on our governments to save us when disaster survival situations occur.

The sad fact is, our governments may very well impede our ability to survive
What if the disaster we face is ten or even a thousand times larger? The sad fact is, our governments may very well impede our ability to survive.

We all need to implement some sort of general survival plan that will give us an edge right from the beginning when disaster occurs. But where does one start and what are the major considerations and needs? This article will go far in helping to answer these questions and put you well on your way to crafting a survival plan of your own.

The 9-point survival plan is made up of the following:

  1. Determination to acquire the means of survival and follow through when a disaster emergency occurs.
  2. Staying healthy at all times so that when an emergency does occur you start right from the beginning in excellent health to meet any challenges you may face.
  3. Making a preparedness budget, so that your survival supplies and training are kept up to date at all times.
  4. Creating survival action plans, so that when TSHTF you are ready to move directly into action with a minimum of delay.
  5. Maintaining a “Bug-Out bag” or "Bug-out Kit", a grab and go survival emergency bag that will keep you alive when disaster strikes suddenly and unexpectedly.
  6. A long term survival plan for when a disaster is of long duration.
  7. Increasing your survival training at every opportunity.
  8. Practicing your survival skills so that they are ready for use when the time comes.
  9. Not advertising the fact that you are prepared to survive, so that those with little or no disaster preparedness will not attempt to harm you or steal your preparations.

In the coming days Survival Topics will explore the 9 points of this survival plan so that you too will be a survivor come what may.

Remember - when a disaster emergency strikes all you can depend on is what you already got.

Cash money can be extremely important. A few thousand dollars can be very useful for procuring any number of post-disaster scarce resources, from food to gas to shelter; not to mention bribes to get you through blocked roads or even across borders. Cash machines will not function, nor will banks be open.

You're right Bill and that is an excellent point. Cash is King and when you have it there are often many things you can procure.

Having something to barter also works well. If the situation is exceedingly bad, cash may be nearly worthless but items people are addicted to (which I won't go into here) and life necessities will suddenly be worth a great deal.

With all the bad weather we have been having, and the expectation of more to come, it pays to have a good survival plan all worked out ahead of time.  I enjoyed reading this series and it gave me some good ideas.  When it comes to surviving anything preparedness websites like this are good resources to have.  Thank you very much!
