More Articles Related to Preparedness

SurvivalBlog.com has an interesting and informative article on Active Preparedness Planning where Paul C goes into detail about his seven steps in identifying and mitigating threats.

According to the author there are basically of two types of threats you need to consider for survival, namely man-made and natural. Man-made threats include people wanting to do you harm, fires, terrorism, looting, vandalism, and the like. Natural threats consist of storms, floods, earthquakes, and wildfires. You get the picture.

For each potential threat you then find relevant information. For example if you live in an area prone to flooding, keep abreast of the frequency of occurrence of these floods and consider the chances of another flood happening in the near future. Note the potential for breakdown of services including heat, lights, availability of food and supplies, police protection. Is there a chance for civil unrest.

Next the survivor should take special consideration of those survival threats that are deemed most likely. Perhaps your nearby neighbors are living right on a flood plain but you are on a raised area well above flood stage. However, should a major flood occur your property may become the target of looters.

Once you have determined the most likely survival threats you are liable to face, determine what you will need in order to survive these threats. Food, water, clothing, and shelter are no brainers. But you may need special survival equipment like weapons, your medications, perhaps a means to make water safe to drink.

Next, you need to know how long you will need to supply yourself with these critical needs. A flood may mean you are on your own for a week or so, but a major terrorist attack or war could mean you will need your survival supplies to last months or even years.

Now with your knowledge of the main threats you face, the critical resources you will need to survive these threats, and how long these threats are likely to threaten your survival, you can create a list of types and amounts of survival materials you need. This not only includes the obvious survival food and water etc, but also the skills you will need to learn or sharpen. Equipment like generators, water purification, means of making fire and communication gear come to mind. Materials to barter for supplies and unforeseen means can be very valuable in a survival situation.

There are often alternatives to facing a specific survival situation head on. If you know a large flood is about to occur it may make more sense to pack up and escape it. If terrorists have set off a dirty bomb leaving may be your only realistic choice. You should develop a number of contingency plans and be ready to implement them at a moments notice according to the situation at hand.

What I like about Paul's article on active preparedness is he goes through the process of determining a survival strategy step by step. This can induce the survivor to think of exactly what it is he needs to survive and what it will take to survive through the threat.
