Included in your survival preparedness plan of action is the Bug-Out Bag. A bug-out bag allows you to move out at a moments notice with the confidence that you have all you need to survive for at least 72-hours. Every member of your group should have a Bug Out bag or kit handy at all times, wherever they are.
Your bug-out bag should be stored in a rugged backpack for easy carrying, and be light enough to carry on foot for long distances. It is not meant for long-term survival, but rather to get you to your pre-arranged rallying point upon "bugging out" where your major supply cache is located.
A good place to keep your bug out bag is in the trunk of your vehicle or in a closet at the office if you commute to work via bus or subway. Depending upon your lifestyle, you may need to cache more than one bug-out bag in order to insure a bag is close by at all times. One never knows when a disaster situation may occur.
Bug-Out Bag Contents
The properly made bug-out bag should contain enough supplies to last at least 72-hours. A good bug-out kit includes:
- Survival Food high in fats and calories for the energy you will need.
- Clothing, including rain gear and proper footwear. Functionality and warmth a priority.
- Shelter materials. For example a tarp, small tent, or bivy bag. You should also include a light weight sleeping bag.
- Water and means to purify water.
- First-aid materials.
- Basic survival gear such as a good knife and 550 parachute cord etc.
- Ability to make a fire by at least three means. For example waterproof matches, FireSteel and lighter.
For more detailed information on what you may want to include in your bug-out bag, read the Survival Topics article on the 15 Essentials.
Should normal means of transportation and supply break down, a bug-out bag will give you the necessary supplies you need to survive independently for several days. During this time you can be traveling toward the pre-arranged rallying point of your survival group.
