A common survivalist mindset I meet with all too often is thinking one can purchase the way to complete disaster survival. It’s like a disease where the afflicted cannot say no to another round; always feeling the need to buy the next best survival knife, special long shelf life survival foods, or arms and ammo enough to equip several squads even though they already have plenty of these items.

It’s little wonder this is so. It’s the Miracle of Modern Advertising in action. Our capitalist society runs on making the pitch and making the sale. If you can successfully influence enough people to buy your survival products or click your sponsors links you can make a good living by scaring other people into purchasing products they may be unready for or unable to really use.

Some survivalist merchants have the formula down pat.

  1. Get people to believe the collapse is neigh through doom and gloom tactics.
  2. Convince even the prepared that their preparations are woefully insufficient to get them through the eminent disaster.
  3. Make the pitch; sell the new expensive products that will save them.
  4. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

It is true that most people are woefully unprepared for disaster emergencies. But as the Survival Topic The 80 20 Rule of Disaster Preparedness shows, it’s the basic survival skills and preparations that will save you. Everything else is gravy – or may even get in the way.

Attempting to merely buy your way to disaster survival alone won’t save you. For example, I know a couple of survivalists with large bunkers so full of survival gear I doubt they would be able to squeeze their entire family in. Yet they are totally out of shape physically; with big guts and poor diet they are winded simply climbing a few flights of stairs.

So much for disaster survival preparations. Should the dreaded Zombie hordes come knocking these survivalists would hardly be able to get out of their own way! I would rather face a disaster in excellent physical shape but with little else, than attempt surviving while in wretched physical condition.

You Cannot Buy Your Way Out

A revealing example of how the population thinks when it comes to disaster preparation is their health during times of plenty. They frequently drink to excess and very few get enough regular exercise or eat healthy foods. Twenty five percent of adults even smoke. But when personal disaster occurs, when their health breaks down, they expect they can simply cut a check to a medical professional and get healthy again.

Likewise, buying disaster survival gear to excess is not going save you and your family post SHTF disaster. Once you have the physical basics of survival covered what you really need is real personal survival knowledge and physical and mental well-being. These survival preps cannot be purchased.

Personal Disaster Survival Preparations

The problem many survivalists face with real survival knowledge and experience is that this kind of SHTF survival preparedness takes effort. Simply writing a check or letting off a few rounds at the local range is no replacement for practicing real survival skills, eating right, and staying in top physical shape.

What are the basic survival skills you need in order to survive most disasters? From talking with many so-called survivalists I know that most of them do not have a clue.

I highly recommend you start by reading the Survival Topic The 5 Basic Survival Skills. Use this as a springboard from which to enter the world of real disaster survival, where you and your family are prepared to face nearly any kind of man-made or natural disaster.
