Fire Survival Shelters
More Articles Related to Safety With yet another spate of wildfires burning out of control in the western states, the Survival Topic concerning fire survival shelters has flared up once again. The US Forest Service has a pdf describing its new larger personal fire survival shelter. The previous version of this standard wilderness fire survival gear is still in use but complaints were it is not large enough for a number of people due to height and or girth. The new fire survival shelter is made for people over 6ft tall or have a girth larger than 53-inches.
I should tell you these personal fire survival shelters are only meant as a last ditch defense against being trapped by a forest fire. Typically you will not survive being directly in a hot blaze even when protected by one of these - you must position yourself in as open an area as possible. The reflective material of the fire survival shelter is designed to insulate you from the heat but will only go so far in protecting you from a raging inferno.
