First Survival Items

The Survivalist Boards website has a post entitled “What are the first items a person new to survivalism should buy?” The member then goes on to mention how he is worried that he does not have the survival gear necessary for long term preparedness. Should an event occur in the near future he may be totally unprepared.

This is an excellent question as it touches upon both what may be the most important survival preparedness items as well as what is most likely to be in demand when time is limited and a survival scenario is at hand.

Some of the best advice when first starting in long-term preparedness is to simply learn. Read the books, visit the websites, and see what the experience hands are doing. Only then can you really go about acquiring the right skills and survival gear you need.

Beginning acquisition of preparedness supplies is actually quite easy to accomplish once you know what you need. As members of the Survivalist Boards mention, a great method to acquire survival gear and foodstuffs is doing it a small amount at a time.

For example, you will want an extra supply of survival food in your preparedness cache; so every time you go food shopping purchase a little extra food that is easy to store and resistant to spoilage. Dried beans and rice high in proteins and canned goods of all types fit into this category. Buy the things you enjoy eating anyway with an eye toward nutrition.

Do the same with your survival gear. Find out what is working for experienced survivalists and expert survivors then acquire these items as time and budget allows. Remember, you do not need the latest and greatest survival gear in order to survive. A good survival multi-tool from Wal-Mart can be just as useful as a high end survival knife (or even Bear Grylls Survival Knife). The fact is, the best survival knife is the one you happen to have when you need it.

Some of the best actions you can take for survival preparedness are free. For example aquire and fill empty plastic jugs with water and develop an action plan for the various contingencies that may occur in your area.

The Survivalist website is run by Kev, an excellent host and a great survival forum from which you can learn a great deal.

Getting started definitely isn't as hard as it sounds, but I would disagree with the recommendation to buy a multi-tool in the Wal-Mart camping section. Take that $10-$15 and put it towards a Leatherman multi-tool which is made of far superior materials and will last you for years.

Survival Topics - yes, the Leatherman multi-tools such as the Leatherman Wave are an excellent addition to survival gear. However, a tool in your survival gear, even a cheaper model, can be make all the difference in a wilderness survival situation.  If you cannot afford the more expensive Leatherman tools a good start is the Walmart camping section.
