When the few items they have on hand are exhausted they will probably to turn to you, especially if they see you are getting along just fine living off your previously prepared survival supplies. This may or may not become a problem and will be covered in a future Survival Topics article.
But what exactly are the survival supplies you will most need and how much?
The Big Three Survival Supplies
Most of us by default have plenty of clothing for the environment in which we find ourselves, a roof over our heads, and basic tools. Even if our everyday shelter is destroyed we will have the wherewithal to construct something serviceable from the debris.
This is where the survival skills you have been practicing come in. Because you already know what is required to survive you can take charge and make sure those around you are set up in a way that will increase their chances of survival.
In a long term survival situation it is going to be the perishable items that quickly become in short supply and may become the limiting factor to sustaining life.
The big three perishable survival goods are
- Food – enough survival food to live. (See How Long Can You Live Without Food?)
- Water – for drinking and cleanliness. (See How Long Can You Survive Without Water?)
- Fuel – to heat, cook, and perhaps even operate a gas generator or vehicle.
Of these, survival food is by far the most important. Water can almost always be obtained in some way and made safe to drink. Fuel is really only necessary for cooking and heating - often there will be plenty of wood or other debris to burn. Even without fuel for heating you can survive the coldest weather if you know how. But without enough food it will be impossible to keep your survivors strong, healthy, and mentally alert.
