Home Survival Supplies Part 4
More Articles Related to PreparednessWhen creating your long-term survival food supply there are several things about the food itself to consider. These include:
- Storability of the survival food. The food must be stored for long periods of time and still be edible when you need it.
- Nutrition of the survival food. Your survival food must supply enough minerals, fats, vitamins, and protein to sustain life.
- Expense of the survival food. Buying MRE’s and pemmican will get expensive fast and may exceed what you and your family can afford.
- Survival Food Rotation. You must rotate the items in your survival food preparedness cache or risk having them go out of date. Unless you want to throw out a great deal of food on a regular basis, the best thing you can do is consume your survival food in your regular meals as you replace it with fresh stock. MRE’s may not be the best option unless you enjoy eating them often.
- Edibility of the Survival Food. You are far better off if the components of your survival food cache are items you eat anyway. During a survival situation you do not want to stress your body further by consuming foods it is not accustomed to eating or foods that you do not like.
- Ease of Survival Food Preparation. Under trying circumstances you may not have access to elaborate facilities; you may be preparing your food outdoors over an open fire.
When all these are considered, I find the following to be among the best survival foods for your long-term preparedness stocks:
- White Rice
- Dried Beans – get the multi-bean mix if possible, or bags of many varieties
- Powdered Milk
- All Purpose Flour
- Canned Fish – tuna, salmon, or other fish
- Canned Vegetables including spinach, pumpkin, and carrots
- Olive Oil or Vegetable Shortening
- Honey or sugar
- Iodized Salt
- Multi-vitamins
- Various spices according to your taste
Beans and rice together form a complete protein, which makes them as good as meat, yet they are much easier to store for long periods of time without spoilage. You will also receive protein from the fish and powdered milk.
As you can see, many of these items for your preparedness survival food supply are inexpensive as compared to many types of food. In addition, they are actually very good for you and you can consume this food as you rotate it out for replacement.
In following Home Survival Supplies articles we will examine how much you will need of each item as well as additional food and survival gear.

Would there be any harm in using yellow dent field corn sold as feed for cornmeal etc? I have contacted the FDA and USDA and their response is they are not sure. Some bags say not for human consumption so that is a given. But others do not have that statement. If anyone knows the difference, I would really like to know.
