The Hot Stove Controversy Accord

I am pleased to write that a heated flame war was avoided at the BushCraftUK.com community forum and all parties have simmered down to an amicable agreement. This is good because the subject involves an excellent little portable wood stove that has some great potential as survival gear.

The Nimblewill Stove

In August of 2006 a forum participant posted a modified design to what he calls the Portable Nimblewill Wood Stove, complete with design drawings, a list of modifications made, and a number of excellent suggestions from other members of the bushcraftuk.com forum.

This small stove design is made so that you can take the wood stove apart, and pack it flat. It is easy to think of a number of uses such a portable stove could be put to. I have had my eye on this forum post for quite some time with the idea of using just such a stove for heating a tent, lean-to or debris hut. It would also be excellent for boiling water and cooking. The stove would be easy to backpack in to any site.

In September the forum participant posted his stainless steel version to the forum, which he actually built himself, with modifications to his August design. Once again his post was very well received and some excitement elicited in possibly building more. His CAD (computer aided design) drawings and photos as well as actual pictures of his metal work laid it all out as clear as day how to build this little gem.

Granted, there are a number of similar stove designs out there and some of these were discussed throughout these two posts. But this fine little wood stove had special adaptations and features to be sure.

Light the Fire

Then the fireball that started it all. On the 15th of December another participant in the forum posted pictures of a great little portable wood stove. Without giving anyone else credit, he wrote “working with some friends of mine to develop a small flat pack firebox/stove ”....

Built of a very similar design to that which others had been posting their detailed plans for, Woodland Edge had begun commercial production of this handy little woodstove.

Oops.

Within an hour and a half the original poster was right there to call him on that one. “Not at all impressed,” as he put it, for a post “which gives no credit to anyone other than themselves”.

Certainly heating up a bit in there.

There was banter back and forth about lack of credit given, possible patent design infringement etc that could lead to trouble, as is the hope of lawyers who would salivate over a chance to get in on something like this.

The Woodland Edge Firebox

But in the end all seems to be well between the two parties and the small portable woodstove made by Woodland Edge and designed through the collaboration of many is now available as the Woodland Edge Firebox. I also notice a change to their web page, the addition of:

“Developed from the modified Nimblewill stove described on the Bushcraft UK forum.”

Also Woodland Edge agrees to make a donation to the Woodland Trust for each stove sold as well as provide the a free stove to the guy who posted the plans. I especially like how he phrased bushcraft as “very much about how you approach life and seeking to find solutions and move forward”.

This portable wood stove called the Woodland Edge Firebox is very interesting to be sure and could be used in survival situations where warmth and cooking are needed. Weighing in at just 1.7 kilograms or 3.1 pounds, and made of stainless steel, it packs flat and looks very easy to assemble.

The guys at BushCraftUK forums are arranging a group buy of the stove for £45.75 delivered. Later on when production is in full gear they will be be retailing for between £50-£55 + £7 pp.
