You need to drink a certain amount of water every day, in addition to cooking and cleaning. More if the weather is hot or you are active. The problem is that water is heavy and bulky, which makes it difficult to transport in large enough quantities to satisfy your needs when you are on the move.

If you are away from home for more than a day or two you are probably going to have to utilize local sources of water that may or may not be contaminated with disease organisms. The cardinal rule is, when in doubt always treat your water supply before using it.

Even in civilization, at times municipal authorities will issue recommendations to treat your tap water before using it. There are many methods for treating water to make it safe to drink. Perhaps you have had occasion to use one or more and believed you had done it correctly.

Bad Water Warning

Be aware: even treated water can be bad water if you use inferior materials or methods. Just because you have a faucet filter or have put a chemical into your water does not mean the disease organisms have been destroyed. In fact, an unclean filter can actually harbor disease organisms and add them to the water you are treating every time use it. And chemically treated water may actually continue to be infested with bad bugs.
