Today while reading “The South Pole”, An Account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition in the ‘Fram’ 1910 – 1912” by Roald Amundsen, I came upon this excerpt:

“…the only way in which one can expect work to be properly and carefully carried out is to have it done by the very men who are to use the things. They know what is at stake. They do it so that they may reach their destination; more than that, they do it so that they may come back again.”

An expert cold weather survivor, Amundsen writes from experience hard won and tempered in the unforgiving antarctic wilderness.

When you rely upon your survival gear for life itself, you need to make sure it is of the best quality both as to content and construction. And the only way to insure quality survival gear is to either make improvised gear yourself or have someone you completely trust make the survival gear for you according to your exacting specifications based on personal needs and experience. There is no other way.

When I find the time I will post the complete text of The South Pole by Roald Amundsen as it is an excellent read for developing your cold weather survival skills.
