The New FireSteel Scraper The new and improved FireSteel.com FireSteel scraper is shown next to our popular Armageddon 3/8 x 4-inch FireSteel.com FireSteel. |
The new FireSteel.com scraper is used in basically the same way as the old model. Simply scrape it along the length of the firesteel rod to create a shower of very hot 5000+ degree sparks that will catch your tinder on fire. And once again note that a FireSteel.com FireSteel will light a fire even when wet and one FireSteel can be enough to light hundreds and even many thousands of fires.
Let's now closely examine the new FireSteel.com FireSteel scraper so that we are able to use it to its full benefit.
The surface of the new scraper is not as bright and shiny as the old model. This is because it is composed of a different material that gives superior sparking performance. If you were to hold an old scraper and a new scraper against each other you will also note that the new scraper is about a 1/4 inch longer for a total of three-inches. This additional length resides primarily in the working part of the firesteel that does the actual scraping. The width of the scraper remains at about 15/16ths of an inch wide and about 1/32 of an inch thick.
The underside of the new FireSteel scraper no longer has the raised ridges of the old model. Although these ridges worked well for creating sparks when scraped along the firesteel rod,

Scraping a FireSteel These two pictures show the proper way to make sparks while scraping your FireSteel.com Firesteel. Hold the scraper at an angle as shown while placing the rounded firesteel within one of the curved "nooks" on the scraper. With a smooth stroke, applying pressure against the rod, scrape hard and fast. The result will be a shower of sparks. |

The Parallel Scrape The new FireSteel.com FireSteel scrapers have a nook on the tip too, that allows you to scrape the firesteel as shown in this series of pictures. Scraping your firesteel in this way gives great leverage and will also help prevent hitting your hand or fingers against the surface you are scraping towards. |
The most important feature of the new FireSteel.com FireSteel scraper is the rounded nocks on the working end, as shown in the pictures. These are constructed in such a way as to maximize contact between the scraper and firesteel as you do the scraping motion. Since the scraper is coming into contact with more of the FireSteel, more sparks are produced.
A great addition to the new FireSteel.com FireSteel scraper is a nock at the very tip of the scraper. The most common way of using the old scraper was to hold it perpendicual to the FireSteel while scraping. While this method can still be used with the new model of scraper, you run the risk hitting your hand against the surface you are scraping toward. Should that surface be, for example, a rough rock, you could end up skinning your hand or fingers.
With the ability to scrape sparks from your FireSteel using the tip of the scraper, you can use the scraper parallel to the FireSteel rod as shown in the picture. This will save your hands. What's more, many users find that using the scraper in this way increases leverage and produces even more sparks with each scrape.
Be sure to give the new FireSteel.com FireSteel scrapers a try, and check out the variety of FireSteel gear. I think you will like what you see!
