Practice Survival Skills
More Articles Related to PreparednessSurvival book knowledge and survival training can only go so far in making you an expert at staying alive. What you really need to do is practice your survival skills in the environments you are likely to find yourself.
It is important that you acquire survival experience in as realistic conditions as possible. You need to discover what works and what doesn’t before an actual survival situation occurs. This will give you the time and opportunity to work out the inevitable problems and try new survival techniques in relative safety.
A good way for you to gain practical survival experience is to go on extensive outdoor trips. In practicing your survival skills in a safe environment you will learn about the strengths and weaknesses of your survival gear, yourself, and the people you rely on.
The longer your survival practice trips the better. Two to three days in the bush would be a minimum practice run, though a week to ten days is better. Here you will discover what you need to add to your survival kit and, just as importantly, what you can get rid of. You will also hone your survival skills so that you become more efficient in the basics such as navigation, making fire, acquiring and preparing food and water for safe consumption, and setting up shelters.
Another method is to incorporate survival skills into your everyday life. Occasionally make an entire meal from the local plant and animal life. Keep an eye out for plants that you may be able to use for food, cordage, or medicine. Study plants that are useful to the survivor and try them out at home before you need to use them in a real life survival situation.
Learn the habits of your local wildlife. Fishing, hunting, and trapping are all excellent pastimes that hone the survivor’s ability to find food and increase awareness of the natural environment.
As the saying goes “Practice makes perfect”. Though nobody can ever be a perfect survival expert, the true survivor has a large store of ever growing experience that he can rely upon when any survival situation occurs.
