Steripens Sterilize drinking water with UV Light

The Steripen is a neat little piece of survival gear that can make your water safe to drink.  Contaminated water is a survival hazard in that it can adversely impact your health, threatening your ability to make it out alive.

Steripens are small water purification devices that use UV ultra-violet radiation to sterilize drinking water. Simply immerse the light tube into the water, turn it on and take a short break. Your drinking water is flooded with UV light and the disease causing organisms inactivated

Technology has brought these survival gadgets down to sizes that make Steripens easy to carry and so are ideal for backpackers, survival kits, and anyone who needs the ability to make drinking water safe.

How Steripens Work

A Steripen works in much the same way as the Solar Water Disinfection method.

UV light is a natural component of light from the sun. Besides causing sun burn on humans it also destroys or inactivates disease causing organisms that may be lurking in your drinking water. While the SODIS method uses a passive method of simply acquiring UV light from the sun, a Steripen UV water purifier actually produces it in great quantity.

In fact, the light the UV Steripen produces is 90% ultra-violet. With the Steripen rather than having to wait a day or two you can obtain safe drinking water in a mere 45 to 60 seconds!

UV water purifiers like the Steripen are gaining acceptance for those who need to make sure their drinking water is safe.

Interesting, but battery-powered, no doubt. Too complicated for my taste, wouldn't feel that i could really trust a UV water purifier.

The UV water filter runs on batteries, negating some of its usefulness. It also is borderline as far as purifying water with any turbidity in it.

Field tests conducted by survival experts have shown it to be only effective on clear water, and not 100 percent effective on oocytes and amoeba.  UV filter devices are good for hiking, but for true survival water you are better served with a katadyne water filter followed by iodine or chlorine.

They make solar rechargeable steripens.
