cnews.ca reports he Canadian Winnipeg Fire-Paramedic Service put on a demonstration on how to get out of the water when you fall through the ice. How to get yourself out of the water after falling through the ice can be quite an effort.
Radul mentioned that, "Freezing water will suck the heat out of you 20 times faster than air at the same temperature." A healthy person will generally have five to fifteen minutes before they find themselves unable to move.
Pet Survival Skills
If you are a pet lover then you need to have pet survival skills too.
Dr. Marty Becker has written an article for the McClatchy-tribune at azstarnet.com entitled Immediate First Aid Key to Survival.
Teaching yourself pet first aid before a pet emergency will increase the odds of your pet surviving.
More informtaion on helping your pet survive can be had by talking to your veterinarian. Pet survival information can also be found online at the College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (www.acvim.org) and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (www.acvecc.org).
Body found in wheel Well of Jet
Latimes.com reports a the body of a teenager was found in the wheel well of a jet at Los Angeles International Airport. It seems this is an all too common event. On Jan 12th a body was found in an Atlanta jet that had come in from a 9 hour long flight from Senegal.
Amazingly there are jet stowaway survivors. One man successfully survived a flight from French Polynesia to Los Angeles. His body temperature had dropped to a normally fatal 79 degrees F. A Cuban reached Montreal. And a Senegalese made it to France in a 5 hour flight but perished when he tried to do it again.
If you can survive low temperatures, well below 0 degrees F, and survive the lack of oxygen at over 30,000 feet of altitude for hours, you may succumb to falling 1000 feet when the landing gear opens.
Few people who attempt to hide in the wheel wells of jets survive the journey. Many come from impoverished nations seeking to better their lives.
Local preparations for a pandemic
The lajuntatribunedemocrat.com reports officials take first step in preparing for a pandemic.
I am seeing more of this: local authorities planning locally for the great pandemics that are sure to come.
The earth's large and often crowded population coupled with the ability for millions to travel around the world in a mere 24-hours is the perfect breed ground for pandemics. It is just a matter of time.
As well all know from the Katrina-New Orleans debacle, you cannot rely upon your governments to help you when a real emergency develops. The first and foremost mandate of any big governmental agency is to make sure it keeps itself going. If they can help you that is good too, but it is certainly an afterthought.
Kudos for these local people taking action to protect themselves. Pro-active steps to increase their chances of surviving a pandemic when are own governments seem to be dragging their heels.
Pandemic preparation can lead to your survival.
