Survival Whistles
More Articles Related to Survival GearThe survival whistle is one of the best signaling devices you can carry in your survival gear bag. Compact, light in weight and easy to use, the survival whistle can get you noticed.
The universal signal for help is three of anything in quick succession. Three shrill blasts on your survival whistle will alert anyone within earshot that something is amiss.
Survival Whistle VS Shouting
I have conducted tests in the deep forest where shouting as loud as I could carried for only a few hundred yards at most. A shrill blast from my survival whistle was audible for nearly ten times that distance!
In addition, the sound of a whistle is unmistakable amongst the natural sounds of the forest. While the sound of my voice using the shouting method was dissipated by the thick vegetation, the direction from which the whistling came was easily tracked by the human ear.
This test also revealed a shortcoming of the shouting method for communication: your vocal chords will quickly give out and your breath becomes exhausted. However, you can continue to blow on a whistle almost indefinitely, even when weak or injured.
Other Used for the Survival Whistle
The survival whistle can be used in urban environments as a means of defense by drawing attention to the situation, for example if you are attacked by a mugger. Children can wear a thin survival whistle on a string around their neck.
I have not tried it, but if confronted with an angry bear, dog, or other animal, the shrill blast of a loud whistle may very well deter them from attacking.
Choosing a Survival Whistle
When in the market for a new survival whistle you should consider a few important factors. For example, in cold climates a metal whistle may not be a wise choice, as wet flesh will freeze to the whistle as you attempt to blow it. If you plan on wearing the whistle on your person, you may opt for a flat shape that is easily worn around the neck or placed in your pocket. If you need a survival whistle for your vehicle survival kit or aircraft survival kit then the size is of less importance.
There are a wide variety of survival whistles to choose from, some much better than others. While having a whistle of any kind is better than none at all, I recommend carrying a Storm Whistle as it is certainly one of the loudest and best designed. If you are in need of an underwater whistle, the Storm’s are also a good choice.
Small in size, light in weight and inexpensive, the survival whistle deserves its place in your survival kit.
Northern California
I would add that a whistle without a "pea" rattling around inside would probably be a better choice. Besides the annoying rattling, the pea could freeze in place. Also, whistles with no pea tend to have flatter chambers.
