The study of wilderness survival is enhanced by reading historical accounts. It was not very long ago that large areas of the earth remained unexplored. Those who traveled through these areas became masters of planning and improvisation in order to meet the challenges of surviving the unknown and carrying through with intended objectives.
Before the advent of modern survival equipment these men made do with supplies repurposed from other more ordinary uses or made their own to fit the circumstances. This often required extraordinary inventiveness that is often lacking in todays pre-packaged world.
Even today, those who successfully survive in wilderness or other situations are great planners and equally important are able to use the available resources to best advantage. Often this requires thinking "outside of the box" and clever application to survival problems as they arise.
