Windmill Delta Stormproof Lighter
More Articles Related to Survival GearIn many survival situations the importance of building a fire cannot be stressed ednough. However often this usually simple task is complicated by adverse weather.
Nothing is proof to the worst of storms, but Windmill's Delta Stormproof Lighter comes close. Encased in a tough armor-like elastomer shell, the storm and water proof lighter is rugged, dependable and impact resistant. The stainless steel wire closure ensures a dry flame area.
A Dependable Survival Lighter
Designed to light in winds as high as 80 miles per hour, this survival lighter will also work in temperatures down to 40 degrees below zero F.
The Delta Storm proof lighter utilizes a platinum catalyzer coil to ignite butane fuel via piezo-electric ignition. This allows it to make a flame even when damp.
The manufacturer claims the lighter will perform thirty thousand ignitions. With a full tank butane (one gram) , you can expect about 300 three to five second ignitions, easily enough for several week long expeditions. The Delta Shockproof Series has a large fuel window that makes it easy to check on fuel levels.
The lighter itself weighs in at 2 ounces and is about 2-1/2 x 2 x 1 inches. Available colors are matte black, matte green smoke green, and blaze orange.
Windmill Delta Field Test
In field tests the Windmill Delta lighter performed very well, with a large flame that could ignite dry branches as large around as my thumb. Above treeline in the White Mountains of NH I was able to get the lighter to function in a temperature of 20 degrees F and thirty-five mile per hour winds at 5500 feet above sea level. Windmill claims the stormproof lighter can function well at 9000 feet, and even as high as 15000 feet with some adjustment.
A lifetime guarantee covers the lighter. Should it fail you can return it and they will restore it to operating condition free of charge.
An expensive lighter listed at $60, it is certainly reliable. If you check around online you can probably find them in the mid-30 dollar range. Fire being what it is in a survival situation, the Essential Gear Windmill Delta Stormproof lighter could very well be one of your best investments in survival gear.

I would seriously recommend the Windmill Trekker instead of the one shown because it can hold 4 times as much butane and is just as rugged.

While it certainly sounds like a great idea, I always worry about such sophisticated manmade items. I'll stick with my flints and stormproof matches. I have never had a problem lighting one of their stormproof matches in all kinds of weather.
All of my various packs have numerous Trioxane packets to handle an emergency like not being able to light a fire under adverse circumstances.

My experience with the Windmill Trekker was great for the first 2 months. Then the gas valve failed and the fuel leaked out. Finding someone to send it in for warranty is a whole other nightmare. Depend on a fire steel and not this lighter.
